Running outdated software causes some computer problems. OS X, the MacBook Pro operating system, has a built-in function to check for software updates, which is accessible from the Apple menu.

Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen to access the Apple drop-down menu.

Select 'Software Update.' The 'Software Update' progress bar appears on the screen as the computer checks for updates online. When the progress bar finishes, the window returns the message 'Software updates are available for your computer. Do you want to download and install them' if any updates are available.

Click 'Continue' to install all the updates. In some cases, you are prompted to enter your user name and password to install the updates. Your computer restarts automatically, if the updates require a computer restart.

Click 'Show Details' to see a list of the updates for your computer, if you don't want to install all the updates.

Click the box next to any of the updates to remove the check mark and skip that update.

Click the 'Install' button to install the updates. You may be prompted to enter your user name and password. Your computer restarts automatically if the updates require a computer restart.
